<image:title>About Us - Our Objectives.</image:title>
<image:caption>The NZ Epilepsy Assist Dogs Trust is a charitable trust registered in 2007 for the purpose of training dogs in New Zealand with the following objectives. To aid people living with epilepsy to lead more independent lives. To promote public awareness of the importance and role of epilepsy assist dogs. Provide support to people training and using Epilepsy Assist Dogs. Use the funds of the trust as the trustees may consider necessary or proper in payment of the costs and expenses of carrying out the objectives of the Trust.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - Why we were formed.</image:title>
<image:caption>One in 100 people in NZ have Epilepsy or develop it at some stage in their lives and although in most cases it is controlled with medication or in some cases surgery, many people need more assistance to live a fulfilling life. Our founder Andrea Hawkless knew this from personal experience as her own son had severe epilepsy that was not significantly improved by either option. After considerable research and with no such organisation existing in NZ, Andrea formed NZEADT to enhance the lives of people whose epilepsy significantly affected their daily lives. Sadly, Andrea passed away in 2024 but her wonderful legacy lives on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Jared and Samson - Jared. First there was Samson…and now Bear.</image:title>
<image:caption>Samson was Jared’s first assist dog and his constant companion for over a decade. Samson, a very handsome golden retriever, was the first dog to retire from service within the organisation. He stayed on with Jared once he had retired and was a companion for labradoodle Bear who became Jared’s new assist dog. Having two dogs in the same house worked well for Jared as Bear learned a lot just by imitating Samson. It also made the transition emotionally easier for Jared having the dogs spend a year together before Samson died two years. For Jared, who has cerebral palsy as well as epilepsy, having assist dogs has been life-changing. They not only offer companionship but are conduits for social interaction, finding that many people want to stop and talk when he is out and about with Bear. Jared works in an architectural firm in Auckland and Bear accompanies him everywhere he goes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My name is Kiri Lee and Molly, my black Labrador Retriever, is my Epilepsy Assist Dog and she has given me a more independent and happy life. Before I got Molly I had to rely on family and friends, who are very supportive, to take me places but now that I have Molly I have the ability to get myself to the places I need to go by using the public transport system and by walking, which were things I was a bit dubious about doing alone, as I tend to wander when I have a seizure and don’t necessarily know where I am for a short period of time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stephanie and Chester - Stephanie and Chester.</image:title>
<image:caption>Having an assist dog has given independence to Stephanie Thurlow, something she has wanted since she was 20. Before labradoodle Chester came into her life, she found that her epilepsy was standing in the way of the life she wanted to lead, particularly being able to go flatting. Stephanie was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 4 and would have a seizure once a week in a good week to three times a night every night in a bad week. While she tried not to let her illness get in the way, it did make life harder as she was unable to get a driver’s licence and had trouble getting full-time employment. Since having Chester she has done courses, gone flatting and now has a job.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kate and Roxie - Kate and Roxie.</image:title>
<image:caption>Kate Hendra’s 5-year-old golden retriever, Roxie, had a rough start to life, coming to the trust through the SPCA. She was 14 months old when Kate got her, and they have been constant companions ever since. Five days a week, the pair walk to the Wellington tobacconist shop where Kate works. Once, when Kate had a seizure in the middle of the road, Roxie raced to the nearby public pool for help. “She made such a fuss that the people came out and called an ambulance, then she squished her body under my head as she is trained to do,” says Kate. Roxie has also been trained to remove Kate’s glasses, which were forever getting broken. “As soon as I fall to the ground, she carefully takes my glasses off and puts them somewhere safe.” Then she positions herself under Kate’s head and waits until the seizure is over. Roxie takes her spectacle security job seriously. “Sometimes she puts my glasses in such a safe place that I can’t find them. Once she hid them behind the toilet and it took me a couple of days to find them.” The devoted duo now have another love in their lives. Roxie was ring-bearer when Kate married Tyson “She loves my husband too,” says Kate. “She sleeps between us in the bed with one paw over him.” Kate & Tyson now have a son.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meg and Milly - Meg and Milly.</image:title>
<image:caption>Meg Rodden’s life changed when her labradoodle, Milly, started coming to school with her. She gained so much confidence that she stood up in front of the whole assembly to talk about her dog, reducing her mother to tears. Meg says it’s really nice having someone she can always trust to be with her. Milly is trained to bark when Meg has a seizure and not stop until help arrives. As most of Meg’s seizures happen during the night, this means her mother can now sleep easy. In a dream job for both, Milly now joins Meg at her front-of-house café job, snoozing quietly under the desk while she works.</image:caption>
